A massive tornado that swept through the US state of Missouri on Sunday claimed the lives of at least 89 people in the city of Joplin. Authorities warn that the toll could rise as rescuers continue searching for victims. The twister destroyed homes, churches and businesses, damaging about 30 per cent of the city. The same storm system that produced the Joplin tornado spawned twisters along a broad swath of the Midwest, from Oklahoma to Wisconsin. At least one person was killed in Minneapolis.
